One of my interests in education is developing digital literacy.  This means that students should acquire the knowledge to use digital tools to show what they are thinking.  Literacy in the 21st century goes beyond reading and writing.  I would like to use this space to give some examples.

This first clip shows how a student can combine music, photography and a poem she wrote to show her understanding of a novel we read in class: One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich.  Students will need to know how to make effective use of media to be successful in the 21st century.

This next clip is also from the same novel.  However, this student chose to film a day in her life and compare and contrast it to the novel we read.  Making text to life connections is an important higher order thinking skill.

Ms. Celine worked with the first graders to develop a story.  I helped the first graders to convert their story into a digital story.  Each of the students participated telling a different part of the story.  They also helped to come up with sound effects that we used to enhance the story.

Ms. Meghan had the idea of creating a journalism class after school.  Together we have worked with the students to film their different stories and edit them together with a cohesive narrative.  The final editions are not ready yet, but it is yet another way that we are exploring digital literacy at AISN.
